How to connect Vonage SMS to SMS Manager in WHMCS

Add your intended Vonage / Nexmo account using the SMS API credentials and sender available to that account. The native gateway uses the SMS API; its API Key and API Secret fields are not an application private-key or JWT setup screen.

Find the matching key and secret

Open the Vonage Dashboard’s API Settings page and select the intended API key. The page identifies the key and its API secrets. Use a matching pair from the same intended configuration, following Vonage’s API Settings guide.

Vonage distinguishes SMS API and Messages API arrangements. If another integration already uses the account, review the intended API and webhook arrangement with its administrator before changing shared settings. Adding this saved gateway does not itself configure incoming-message or delivery-report webhooks.

Add the gateway in SMS Manager

  1. Open SMS Manager → Gateways → Add a gateway.
  2. Choose Vonage / Nexmo and enter a recognisable Gateway name.
  3. Enter API Key and its matching API Secret.
  4. Set From to the sender permitted for that account and intended destination.
  5. Save and use Test connection, then review the intended default and explicit routes.

From is the outgoing identity, separate from the client’s receiving number. A brand name entered here is not sender registration, and availability varies with the provider’s destination requirements. Check the current account and sender setup before relying on a new route.

Interpret the checks

The connection test reads the account balance endpoint. It does not send an SMS or confirm that every From and destination combination will be accepted. Review the standard client Phone Number field or nominated mobile custom field in Settings.

Use Test / Debug Log only for a module rehearsal. A deliberately intended real test can contact Vonage, send a text and incur charges. History stores the initial result and available provider reference; later phone delivery needs separate provider evidence.

If credentials are replaced later, review what else uses them before retiring the old secret. Keep the original redacted error and action time, and reconcile an Unknown send before repeating it.
