What the Twilio connection test checks in WHMCS
Use Test connection to check the credentials and account configured on a PD Twilio SMS gateway. It makes a read-only request to Twilio’s message list. It does not send a test SMS or prove that the selected sender can deliver to a customer.
Run the saved gateway check
- Open PD Modules → Twilio SMS → Gateways.
- Configure the intended Twilio gateway and check Account SID and Authenticate with.
- Confirm that the selected authentication method has its matching credential fields saved.
- Choose Test connection and read the result.
A successful response shows that Twilio accepted that read for the saved account. It is separate from creating a new message, choosing a valid From sender, destination availability or phone delivery. Do not switch to an account-wide credential solely to obtain a successful read.
Investigate an authentication or permission refusal
For API Key mode, check that API Key SID and API Key Secret belong together and are valid for the intended account and API region. For Auth Token mode, check the Account SID and its current token. A copied space, a revoked key or an old token can cause a refusal.
A Restricted API key can distinguish reading messages from creating messages. A successful message-list read does not establish permission to create, and a send-capable key without that read can fail the test. Have the Twilio administrator check the permission for the reported operation rather than granting unrelated account-management access. Review Twilio’s API key types.
If the error indicates a connection problem, check the hosting server’s supported outbound HTTPS access and provider availability. The test is not a reason to repeat a real client notification.
Confirm delivery separately
Once authentication is resolved, review the sender identity, destination restrictions and saved gateway routing. Use Test / Debug Log only to rehearse text without SMS traffic. An intended real test through Twilio is a different action and may be chargeable.
